Funcom's been keeping The Secret World so secret since it was revealed last year that we were beginning to wonder whether the whole game was just one massive leg pull.

However, now some eight months after the MMO was originally confirmed, the studio's started to blow away veil of fog surrounding it.

In an interview with PC Zone magazine, it reveals that classic Japanese horror movie The Ring is a major inspiration for the project.

"The setting for The Secret World is actually our own world... But there is something out there, another world beyond our own", product manager Erling Ellingson has explained.

"In this world there are monsters and there are some very, very dark conspiracies. There are also many myths and legends from our own world, that may play a part in all of this".

Reading between the lines, we get the impression that Funcom is aiming to stick H.P. Lovecraft-style horror in the game, however it's being very cagey at the moment.

One thing it will say though at this stage in development is that the setting is what's, er, setting The Secret World apart from other MMOs.

"We're putting a lot of effort into making huge, believable environments", revealed Ellingson, "you will actually be exploring vast cities such as London and New York. This creates some really exciting opportunities for us as a developer, to actually set a massive online game in real-world cities."

He added, "As I said, the game takes place in what is close to our own present time, but [players] will be battling creatures of darkness across the world and throughout time!"

The Secret World is in development for PC and Xbox 360. There's no release date as yet.

There is another video that shows someactual game play, but its nothing special, just a person running down an old city street.... being that its still in its infancy and all, but it was cool. I need to try to find where I saw it. :P

If you've read any of the Lovecraft books, you will find a good portion of the basis for TSW. Also - look at about all the secret societies in the world, as well as all the mysterious powers that have been part of legends.

Wow! The things to be found here! I had no idea about the development of this game - but this looks like it'll be great! Lovecraft is a tremendous inspiration to me in music and writing. I'll definitely be keeping my eye on this one.

So far, after watching Graeloks video, and making frequent pauses, it has reference to the Mayans (Mentions 4th at, which the mayans believe we are in now (they believe the fifth age starts in 2012) at 0:43) and at the same time a smudged word that MAY read werewolf. At 0:49 are the words KARD, SAYD, ERA, MICONG with odd symbols, perhaps they are factions or 'races' or something along the lines. It appears that something about the antartic is important, and by where the strange symbol/map is, it MIGHT have atlantis in it? Or something about atlantis. (at 1:05). At 1:33 when they say the Dark Days are coming, they might be talking about the Mayan's 5th age, which is also connected to the Apocolypse of the Bible (Thank you History Channel ^.^ lol, they did a special on this stuff...creepy actually). And...just having seen this...Caden you say it comes out in 2010. Yet it says at the very end the date 12/21/2012. Which I think is the end date of the Mayan's 4th age, and the Apocolypse, or near enough. Looking into the forums now. Oh, and just noticing. Back at 0:43 where it had the Mayan Calander referense thing, in very faint letters you can make out the year in a corner, 2012, which is when it is expected to end. Another creepy thing. Happy Easter! Another modification. The website forum that speculates about what is going on says that three cities can be seen in previous hints in two conditions, moderndayish, and in ruins from various ways of destruction, with one saying 2112. So perhaps, seeing you play in past and present, the present is 2112 after an apocolypse and the past is 2012 when the apocolypse happens?
